Jeb Dunkelberger has written a clear and concise description of the nature of our healthcare crisis. In simple, crisp prose he unpacks complexity and allows the reader to arrive at the inevitable conclusion that misaligned incentives drive current outcomes. The system is “perfectly” designed to deliver the outcomes we experience. If we want to change the outcomes, he argues, we must overhaul the system and align the incentives to the outcomes we desire. A distinguishing feature is that the book is highly accessible to those with or without a background in healthcare. Common sense and a few hours of reading will give you a better grasp of the issues than would days or months of pouring over alternative publications. In fact, this volume prepares the reader to confidently tackle more complex versions of the story.Part two recommends possible solutions based on the arguments made in part one. While you may not agree that all of his ideas are effective or even plausible, the introduction of novel and new approaches is both refreshing and welcome.Finally, Jeb is one of a few authors who have identified and take seriously that healthcare functions as one of the key drivers of economic growth. I have argued previously that we must plan for a shift in jobs to the job of effectively addressing social determinants of health if we wish to eliminate 30% or more of the quality waste that exists in our current system. Given that jobs constitute the lions share of healthcare expenses, we cannot simply eliminate waste (read jobs) without crashing the economy. We need a major overhaul and redirection of resources if we are to succeed in providing world class performance at an affordable cost.In short, if you only read one book about healthcare this year, make it this one.
